Each year over 430,000 deaths occur as a direct result of tobacco use, making tobacco the number one cause of death and disease in the United States today. In addition, nearly 53,000 American lives are lost each year due to exposure to the deadly chemicals contained in secondhand smoke; many who die have never picked up a cigarette. Perhaps the only thing worse than the hundreds of thousands who die from tobacco, are those who suffer with its aftermath. Tobacco users and their families endure unspeakable suffering in the form of pneumonia, emphysema, lung disease, heart disease, Crohn's Disease, Buerger's Disease, and numerous forms of cancer. Users and non-users alike incur the cost of tobacco use through their taxpayer dollars in funding for programs like Medicare and Worker's Compensation. Tobacco users get sick more often, take longer to heal from injuries, and cost millions of dollars each year in lost work time and healthcare associated expenses. Exposure to secondhand smoke can impede the brain development of children and increases their likelihood of developing cancer by 20 to 30 percent.
Campbell County Tobacco Prevention (CCTP) is actively committed to: educating our community, providing assistance and prevention resources, and promoting healthy environments for all citizens. CCTP is grant funded by the National Tobacco Settlement Fund in association with Wyoming Department of Health. Our organization is dedicated to the pursuit of the four Centers for Disease Control Goals:
1) To eliminate involuntary exposure to secondhand smoke
2) To reduce tobacco initiation by youth and adults
3) To increase cessation attempts and promote the Wyoming Quit Tobacco Program
4) To reduce tobacco related disparities in our community
All Campbell County Memorial Hospital facilities are tobacco-free buildings for the health of our staff and patients. We encourage all visitors and employees to view your hospital stay as a golden opportunity to stop using tobacco and we remind you that we are here to help! Whether you're a patient or simply interested in quitting, our very own Wyoming Quit Tobacco Program can offer you the FREE resources to quit successfully.
