CCMH Physician Appreciates His New Role

CCMH Physician Appreciates His New Role

When Dr. Philip McMahill retired from his Medical Oncology practice last year, the thing he missed the most was taking care of his patients. Fortunately for Hospice, Dr. McMahill became their Medical Director only a few months into his retirement. As Medical Director, Dr. McMahill is a part of the Hospice team, and often travels to a patient's home to begin the process of hospice care. He sees patients at Close to Home as well and is available by phone 24 hours a day.

"We spend as much time as we need to with the patient and their family," said Dr. McMahill. "We want patients to be comfortable and have quality time."

Knowing that Dr. McMahill is directly involved in patient care can make both patients and families feel better in a most difficult time.

"I try to help them get through it," said Dr. McMahill. "Everyone feels better when they understand what's happening, and have someone to listen to their concerns."

Dr. McMahill is an educator as well, giving presentations to other physicians on terminal disease conditions and hospice issues. He also continues to update the hospice staff on disease processes they encounter, in addition to pain and other symptom control.

"I could do this for a long time," said Dr. McMahill.

The Hospice staff, patients and families he serves couldn't agree more.
